So I started a new job at a company called ICSolutions about a week ago. It’s an almost entirely Linux shop and it’s a flavor of Linux I’m not use to either (I’m generally a Ubuntu fan when Linux is involved). Needless to say, there’s a learning curve with any OS.

Along with this learning curve came my inability to install the flash plug-in. There were some issues with dependencies and libraries that I couldn’t download and, seeing as I didn’t have any impending need for it, I just didn’t load the plug-in. Wow! What a difference!

Without the Flash plug-in installed I’ve found that a HUGE number of sites that I visit regularly are loading MUCH faster. I also see FAR fewer ads on the screen, probably a direct correlation, and my eyes is again being drawn to the content of a site rather than the dancing images of mortgage rate ads. As a developer and secondarily a designer I LOVE this. Content is king again. It seems to me that the only thing I’m missing by not having flash installed is video streaming. It’s a huge loss for sites I visit like CNN but its obvious gains are not having me rushing to install this plug-in on my work computer anytime soon.

Anyone have any similar experiences?

Fulfilling a much needed role in the pimping as well as human cargo industries, ACORN has stepped in as the premier consultant to burgeoning pimps as they attempt to secure public capital in their startup ventures. ACORN is now being touted as the industry leader and offers services from assistance in startup fiscal policies and acquisition of young talent from South American markets to maintenance of assets and corporate organization.

While the old adage “pimpin ain’t easy” still applies, ACORN eases those woes by transforming your cheap whorehouse into a well controlled brothel where ‘hoes’ are now ‘performing artists.’ With assistance from ACORN you can secure public assistance for your facility, enslaved workforce and management team leaving you to focus on the ever important task of keeping your pimp hand strong.

In a horribly believable situation, the number of contractors outnumber U.S. troops in Afghanistan. I always knew the ratio was extremely high but I never thought it was near this level.

What concerns me most is that our government has seen fit to make a business out of war. Since the very nature of business is to survive and to create profits it reasons to argue that business will inevitably perpetuate or attempt to prolong conflict in order to sustain itself. This is without mentioning what is the crux of the argument from most in that “abuses and crimes committed by armed private security contractors and interrogators against local nationals may have undermined U.S. efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan,” as the CRS report noted.

OK, so my buddy Matt and I are driving down IH-37 southbound to Corpus Christi when traffic begins to slow and the lanes merge into one. Initial thought was that there was an accident or something and there would be a bunch of rubber-neckers holding up our progress to the beach. We were right that it was something but we have no idea what as we were then detoured off the highway onto a back road but not before seeing this sign.

Now I’m no contruction manager nor a public safety officer but what the hell does this sign really mean? This is the most ambiguous sign I’ve ever seen for public use.

Since this “incident” Matt and I have concluded that an alien spaceship had landed on the freeway ahead and was making first contact with the head of GM to tell them how to avoid the collapse of the American auto industry. However, after stopping for some coffee and a paper they realized that they were several years too late and now just needed money for gas because it had become too expensive to get home.

Also, there were no police or emergency vehicles around for this process. Just a bunch of dudes with flags waving us onto some country ass road.

It’s nice to see our President out dating his wife. I’ve actually seen quite a bit of controversy about this in the news lately and I can’t quite figure out why. As the President is out meeing with foreign and domestic leaders he has also taken in a show and shared dinner with his wife. It seems a completely appropriate and normal activity and even shows that they have a warm and loving relationship that they stimulate with activities and shared experiences. It’s actually an example well-set for many married couples that I hope to follow myself one day.
